Meerut Culture:- Meerut is one of the important industrial & popular towns in the Northern part of India. It is traditionally known for handloom works, the scissors industry & sports accessories. This city belongs to part of Hastinapur, as the protagonists of the Hindu Epic of Mahabharata. Meerut was one of the prominent cities in the North India zone wherein publishing was set up during the 19th century. Meerut is an important hub of commercial publishing houses between the years 1860& 1870.

Meerut belongs to a vast agricultural area & 3500 hectares of industrial land and proximity to Delhi it is developing as the industrial hub along with more than eight hundred mini and medium scale industries. As of August 2020, Meerut has about 30,000 plus industrial units, including more than 20,000 small-scale units and more than 6000cottage industries.

Recently Central and state governments identified Meerut as a development of IT Hub in NCR Region.

Religions, Languages & Festival

Diwali, Eid, Holi, Dussehra, among most traditional Indian festivals are the pride of Meerut. A fair by the name of Nauchandi Mela is organized two weeks after Holi every year. The fair calibration for about a month and is organized by the Municipal Corporation of Meerut.  Nauchandi Fair started in 1672 & it includes events such as poetry recitations in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, etc.

Meerut is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Meerut Diocese by the Apostolic Bull “Quandoquidem Christus” of February 20, 1956, including districts of Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Garhwal, Ghaziabad, Haridwar, Rampur, Bijnor, Chamoli, Dehra Dun  Saharanpur, Tehri and Uttarkashi in west U.P & Uttarakhand.

The official business language of Meerut is English, Hindi, or Urdu. And the KHARIBOLI language of the Hindustani language is the dominant language for a conversation with local people.

Meerut Cantonment

Meerut is one of the biggest cantonment of India both in a land area approximately 40 SqKm and Population. Meerut Cant was developed by the British East India Company in eighteen hundred years.  India’s First War of Independence in 1857 started from “Kali Paltan” in Meerut Cantonment & Indian soldiers stationed here actively participated in the rebellion.  It has been the regimental center of the JAT Regiment, Punjab Regiment Corps of Signals, Sikh Regiment, and Dogra Regiment.
